A musical partnership

About once a month during the school year, often on a Tuesday or Thursday around 2 or 3 in the afternoon, the Chapel at the BA is transformed into a concert hall thanks to a partnership with the renowned New England Conservatory. Graduate students share their talent through one-hour concerts followed by a Q&A session.

“The partnership between Chestnut Hill Benevolent Association and New England Conservatory has been in place for over twenty years, beginning in 2002,” says Grace Allendorf, Administrative Director of Community Performances and Partnerships at NEC. “The relationship was forged through the former Dean and Provost of NEC, Tom Novak, who had a connection with one of the [BA] administrators at the time.”

Recent performances have included a piano duo, a solo cellist, a five-piece holiday ensemble, and a classical guitarist. Listeners at the BA include residents and staff, but also patients on the Garden Level, as each NEC concert is broadcast on Channel 16 in the Christian Science Nursing Building.

“We are so fortunate to have built this relationship over so many years and know that the BA has been an integral and joyful part of so many of our students’ experiences,” says Grace. “Not only do you provide a beautiful space for music to be shared, but the residents are always so engaged and supportive of our students and their musical journeys. We love the inquisitive nature of the residents, and our students appreciate the vibrant question and answer session at the end of every performance. We always feel welcome and appreciated at the BA, and we couldn’t do the work we do without amazing partnerships like this.”

Those at the BA are already looking forward to seeing what exciting musical talent arrives in the Chapel this fall!
